The First Chakra: Root Chakra

Chakras are energy points within the body that run down the spinal column. Each chakra corresponds with energy centers that are powerhouses to living our best life. Check out our blogs on the Heart Chakra and Sacral Chakra here.

The First chakra or red chakra represents the root which sits at the base of the spine or groin area. This energy center represents safety, security, grounding, stability in all things. If this energy field is blocked by stress and/or lack of conscious inner self care your overall health & wellness can be jeopardized. The root chakra when not aligned can bring about depression, fear, anxiety with an overall feeling of being lost. This chakra helps us to feel connected to ourselves and the world.

The energy fields of the root. Yoga sequences offer a perfect platform to create the stage for a form of inner self love that opens the root chakra up allowing energies to flow freely. The combined effect of doing poses, breath work and intention setting help to create a practice that supports your Muladhara.

Yoga Tree Pose - Hands in Front
Yoga Tree Pose- Hand in Air
Tree Pose - Vrksasana

Tree Pose - Vrksasana

This pose more than any is associated with the Muladhara with the goal being to take root like a tree. You accomplish this starting from a standing mountain pose with your feet anchored on the floor rooted into the ground. Next engage your core, shifting your weight to one foot and drawing the other foot up with your sole against the ankle, shin or thigh, but not the knee area. Bring your hands to your hips and when stable extend your arms up toward the sky palms facing toward each other. Breath. This pose's main focus is to feel rooted and grounded with Mother Earth.

Yoga Chair Pose
Chair Pose - Utkatasana
Yoga Warrior 1 Pose
Warrior I - Virabhadrasana

Chair Pose - Utkatasana

This posture balances the body and helps bring attention and determination to the mind. From standing pose (Tadasana) externally rotate your arms with palms facing forward. Inhale bringing the arms out in front of the body & towards the ceiling with palms facing each other. Simultaneously bend your knees sitting the buttock back and down making sure you can see your toes in front of the knees. Extend the tailbone toward the floor while lowering the belly in and up stabilizing your core. Knees in line with the ankles and either hip distance apart or together. This pose brings an overall sense of grounding and strong feeling of empowerment.

Warrior I - Virabhadrasana I

This pose is a yoga classic power stance pose that energizes the body while stimulating your internal organs. Warrior I helps concentration, balance and roundedness. Starting from mountain pose, step back your left foot and place it back with your heel down and toes pointing out about 90 degrees. Have the center of the foot lined up with the right heel. Bending the right knee tracking over the 2nd and 3rd toes to help stabilize the knee. Inhale and take both arms overhead and bring them down and out to the side at shoulder height. Pointing in opposite directions as if someone is pulling each hand. Try looking out over the right arm if it is available to you and breathe. This pose has a level of concentration needed that grounds you to your root chakra.

In addition, to yoga movements breath-work plays a huge role in opening up the Root Chakra:

PRANAYAMA BREATHING EXERCISE - Audible, Deep, Smooth Breathing

Relax and get comfortable sitting on the floor in an upright position. Bend the index and middle fingers of your right hand. Now take a deep breath, using your thumb to close the right nostril. Inhale and exhale through your left nostril. Release your right nostril and use the ring and pinky fingers to close your left nostril. Inhale and exhale through your right nostril. Repeat this breathing exercise a few times.
